MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – Indonesia's most dangerous volcano forced international airlines to cancel flights to nearby airports Tuesday, as fiery lava lit the rumbling mountain's cauldron and plumes of smoke blackened the sky.
Scientists warned, meanwhile, that the slow but deadly eruption could continue for weeks, like a 'marathon, not a sprint.'
No casualties were reported in Mount Merapi's latest blasts, which came as Indonesia struggled to respond to an earthquake-generated tsunami that devastated a remote chain of islands. The two disasters unfolding in separate parts of the country have killed nearly 470 people and strained the government's emergency response network.
Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 235 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanos because it sits along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' a horseshoe-shaped string of faults that lines the western and eastern Pacific.
Merapi — one of 22 active volcanos now on alert — has killed 38 people since springing back to life just over a week ago, at times forcing the temporary closure of two nearby airports.
Officials in Yogyakarta, the gateway to the famed 9th-century Borobudur temples visited by 1 million tourists a year, and nearby Solo, have cited poor visibility and heavy ash on the runway.

Both airports were running Tuesday, but Malaysia's budget airline AirAsia and Singapore's SilkAir announced the temporary suspension of several international flights because of the smoldering mountain, just 20 miles (30 kilometers) away.
There have been more than 10 large eruptions at Merapi since the first big explosion on Oct. 26, including a violent burst Monday that appeared to have eased pressure inside the crater by creating a vent for magma to escape.
A series of three much smaller eruptions followed Tuesday.
'There's no way of knowing for sure, of course,' said Safari Dwiyono, who has observed the mountain for more than 15 years. 'But based on what we've seen in the last few days, we're hoping there won't be a massive explosion. It's looking like we're in for a marathon, not a sprint.'
The nearly 70,000 villagers evacuated from the area around Merapi's once-fertile slopes — now blanketed by gray ash — have been told they could be expected to stay in crowded government camps for at least three more weeks.
More than 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) to the west, meanwhile, a C-130 transport plane, six helicopters and four boats were ferrying aid to the most distant corners of the Mentawai islands, where last week's tsunami destroyed hundreds of homes, schools, churches and mosques. The tsunami death toll stood Monday at 431, the National Disaster Management Agency said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said relief efforts must be sped up, expressing dismay that it took days for aid to reach the isolated islands, though he acknowledged that violent storms were largely to blame.
The fault line that spawned the killer wave — and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami — is the meeting point of the two of the Earth's dozen major plates, which have been pushing against and under each other for millions of years, causing huge stresses to build up.
The government has raised alert levels of 21 other volcanos to the second- and third- highest levels in the last two months because they have shown an increase in activity, state volcanologists Syamsul Rizal said Monday.
That's twice the number usually on the government 'watch' list.
Hundreds of flights were canceled in Europe after the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokul volcano in April.

Associated Press writers Vijay Joshi in Kuala Lumpur, Achmad Ibrahim in the Mentawai islands and Irwan Firdaus in Jakarta contributed to this report.

The Beauty Blog: "VOTING DAY--it's so not anything to do with beauty
It's time to vote and I hope you're all taking it seriously. This is my attempt at swaying your votes at the last minute. This is of course if you live in Southern CA and in my same district. You might have noticed a couple of years ago that I voted yes on proposition 8. It's kind of a taboo thing to discuss because by saying that I don't believe in gay marriage, to some I'm suddenly just like the people who would burn crosses and run around in white hoods, holding a rope, looking for the nearest tree. To those that feel that way, I'm sorry but I have a right to my beliefs. If you feel differently, agree to disagree ok? Anyway, there are certain individuals that are threatening to overturn proposition 8 which is ridiculous to me because why do we vote if one or two people are going to just change it to how they want it? So a lot of my votes are going to people who I feel are supportive of proposition 8 or um let's see THE LAW.
Meg Whitman
Abel Maldonado
Mimi Walters
Steve Cooley
Carly Fiorina--ugh but she's republican
Ken Calvert--love this guy!

Demi Lovato Rehab Treatment Ends Tour » Right Celebrity: "Demi Lovato’s rehab treatment will put an end to her current opening gig on the Jonas Brother’s tour. Find out what precipitated the move, and see related photos and video here.
LOS ANGELES - OCT 12: Demi Lovato at the 2010 American Music Awards Nominations Press Conference at The Mixing Room - JW Marriott on October 12, 2010 in Los Angeles, CA Photo via Newscom
Fans of the teenage pop star will be disappointed to hear that she will have to drop out of her spot on tour in order to handle some personal problems. Reports state that she has been struggling with some ‘emotional and physical’ issues while on tour, which have gotten in the way of her ability to continue on.
The 18-year-old will undergo treatment at a facility following some ugly incidents on the road. If you’ve been following her lately you know she randomly decided to delete her Twitter account. She also canceled a show because she was apparently too sick to perform.
Now sources are claiming she got into it with a dancer while on tour. TMZ reports that she actually had a physical altercation with a female performer. That incident apparently acted as a ‘catalyst’ for the Demi Lovato rehab stint.
Often times far too much pressure is put on these young stars. Record companies, management, and all of the people that are part of the machine driving teen stars are usually a big part of the downward spiral many of them fall into.
Hopefully this was caught before things got out of hand, and especially before something serious happened. It’s refreshing to see a young celebrity try to take control of their lives and own up to their behavior. Maybe she can turn this into a teachable moment for many of her young, impressionable fans. The lesson: take ownership of your actions.
More on the Demi Lovato rehab story over at RadarOnline. I’ve also included a video and a few photo galleries for you to peruse.

San Francisco Giants World Series Parade Scheduled For Wednesday Morning - SBNation.com: "San Francisco Giants World Series Parade Scheduled For Wednesday Morning
Nov 01 11:27p by Jeff Sullivan
Read More: San Francisco Giants
The 2010 World Series hasn't been over for an hour, and already we know plenty of details about the celebratory parade back in San Francisco. Which, of course, we should expect, given that city officials don't wait for these things to end before planning out how they want to arrange tens if not hundreds of thousands of people. Every city knows how and where it wants to pull off a championship parade. But only one city gets to do it. Pity the poor Texas officials and all of their blueprints.
The San Francisco Chronicle has the information. The parade is scheduled to begin at 11am Wednesday morning, and will start at Montgomery and Washington. From there it will head southbound along Montgomery until it hits Market Street. At Market, it will turn west until it hits Civic Center Plaza.
Following the parade, the team will be presented the key to the city by San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom on the steps of city hall. And as the Chronicle points out:
The parade will replicate the route taken by the team when they came to San Francisco from New York in 1958.

I've never endorsed any candidate on this blog but I'd like to encourage you to vote for Tom Torlakson. His opponent is a good man, a reasonable man, but there are a couple of significant differentiators:
* Torlakson believes that one-size education does not fit all--Not every student should be forced into a college-preparatory curriculum. He opposes the 'everyone to college' fad.
Tom recognizes that some students, for example, those still reading on a fifth grade level when entering high school, are far more likely to find school, employment and life success in a career-technical curriculum: Instead of learning abstractions about the Peloponnesian Wars and geometric theorems, students in career-technical courses learn in a concrete context, which, for example, would prepare them for in-demand occupations such as robotics technician, chef, or medical equipment repairer.
Not surprisingly, when students who were weak academically K-8 are forced into a college-preparatory set of courses, they're more likely to drop out of high school and certainly from college. And even if they defy the odds and graduate, it will likely be with a low GPA from a third-tier college in a not-marketable major. With today's oversupply of college graduates and shortage of job openings, few employers will be excited to see an applicant with sociology degree and 2.5 GPA rom Cal State, Dominguez Hills. Tom Torlakson recognizes, indeed prioritizes the importance of high quality, well-suited options for all students.
* Unlike his opponent, Tom has had experience both as a teacher and as a respected and well-liked California state legislator. That combination is key to getting things done legislatively.
So I encourage you to vote for Tom Torlakson.

Giants win first world title since moving West in 1958 | freep.com | Detroit Free Press
Giants win first world title since moving West in 1958 | freep.com | Detroit Free Press: "ARLINGTON, Texas -- The prize that eluded Willie and Barry at long last belongs to the San Francisco Giants, thanks to a band of self-described castoffs and misfits and their shaggy-haired ace.
Tim Lincecum, Edgar Renteria and the Giants won the World Series on Monday night, beating the Texas Rangers, 3-1, in a tense Game 5 and taking the trophy home to the city by the Bay for the first time.
It was an overdue victory -- the Giants last wore the crown in 1954, four years before they moved West from New York. So much for a franchise that never quite got it done in October despite the likes of baseball giants Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and Juan Marichal. It's November, and now new stars stand tall in San Francisco.
'This buried a lot of bones -- '62, '89, 2002,' general manager Brian Sabean said, ticking off losing Series appearances. 'This group deserved it, faithful from the beginning. We're proud and humbled by the achievement.'
Lincecum outdueled Cliff Lee in an every-pitch-matters matchup that was scoreless until Renteria -- a former Tiger -- earned the Series MVP award by hitting a stunning three-run homer with two outs in the seventh inning. Nelson Cruz homered in the bottom half, but Lincecum returned to his wicked self and preserved the lead.
Lincecum won this game of Texas Hold 'em, beating Lee for the second time in a week. The two-time NL Cy Young winner gave up three hits over eight innings and struck out 10.
Brian Wilson closed for a save, completing a surprising romp through the postseason for a pitching-rich team that waited until the final day to clinch a playoff spot.
Manager Bruce Bochy enjoys calling his Giants a ragtag bunch. Maybe Freddy Sanchez and former Tigers Cody Ross and Aubrey Huff fit that description. But the foundation of this club -- for now, for the foreseeable future -- is totally home grown, built on a deep, talented and young rotation, a rookie catcher with huge star potential and their bearded closer.
'They did all right,' Bochy said. 'I couldn't be prouder of a group. They played with heart and determination. They weren't going to be denied. My staff, they accepted their roles and had only one mission.'
Renteria reprised his role of postseason star. His 11th-inning single ended Game 7 of the 1997 World Series and lifted Florida over Cleveland. Forget that he made the last out in the 2004 Series that finished Boston's sweep of St. Louis -- this journeyman's path led to another title, helped by his go-ahead home run in Game 2.
'It was a tough year for me,' the oft-injured shortstop said. 'I told myself to keep working hard and keep in shape because something is going to be good this year.'
The Giants won their sixth title overall, tying them for third with the Red Sox behind the Yankees (27) and Cardinals (10).

San Francisco Giants parade: Giants World Series 2010 win remarkable. Giants win World Series title after 56 years
San Francisco Giants revised history after 56 years winning the World Series title. Giants clinched their most sought-after base ball title defeating Rangers for 3-1. San Francisco City spent Monday night for celebrating the championship of its beloved Giants.
Renteria and Lincecum lead Giants to their historic coronation in Texas. A big crowd of 52,045 at Rangers Ballpark witnessed Giant’s march to the history after five decades. The young players brought the memories of a delighted night in 1954 when Giants bagged their first title in World Series.
With a three run homer, Renteria etched his name in the walls of Ballpark becoming the star of the Series. Lincecum made the title coronation easier with a dominant eight innings. Rangers’ star ace Cliff Lee who appeared for a farewell match in Texas uniform would try to forget this night.
Renteria was the star of the night as he could make his total hit .412 with two homers and six runs and after all winning the title of MVP. Players and Giants officials were in the peak of celebration throughout the night sharing their happiness with team mates and fans.
Giants’ Cody Ross couldn’t hide his joy saying “I looked up and I saw it clear, and I jumped so high in the air, which I would never do in a regular game.”
On the other hand, Rangers camp was totally shattered as they lost the Series terribly in their first World Series appearance in the franchise’s 39-year history in Texas.
Giants’ players thanked the fans who supported them to return to the title after a long gap. “They’ve been praying for this day,” Lincecum said. “They came up short back in the early 2000s, and now this is their time.” He added.
